The Everlasting Art Association (EAA) was formally established in Taipei in 2000 by Mr. Tu Tsan-Ling, a Professor at National Taiwan University of Arts, and a group of his students. The EAA’s current Chairman is Mr. Lee Ming-Sheng. The EAA currently has 155 members, most of whom studied under Mr. Tu during the more than three decades that he spent teaching at various institutions and organizations. A high percentage of these students are employed at prestigious institutions that include the Office of the President, the Legislative Yuan, the Central Bank, CPC Corporation Taiwan, Taiwan Power, and leading hospitals, schools and colleges. Most of them are amateurs with a strong interest in painting, rather than art school graduates. Many of Mr. Tu’s students display considerable natural talent, combined with dedication and hard work, and their work is in no way inferior to that of professional artists. Several of Mr. Tu’s most outstanding students have won major domestic and international awards, including the Chung Shan Award of Literature & Arts, the National and Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition awards, the Nanying Art Exhibition awards, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Ministry of Transportation and Communications Art Exhibition awards, the Civil Service Art Exhibition awards, the Workers Art Exhibition awards, cross-strait and Taiwan-Japan Art Exhibition awards, etc. Over the last few years, encouraged by Mr. Tu, around a dozen EAA members have undertaken advanced art studies either in Taiwan or overseas, in some cases going on to obtain MFA degrees; some of these students have made the transformation from amateurs into professional artists!

Every week, Mr. Tu gives EAA members instruction in ink brush painting techniques; members also paint from life on a regular basis, both indoors and outdoors. The Everlasting Art Association 2010 Art Awards and Exhibition of Members’ Work has been held annually for over ten years now. The EAA also holds joint exhibitions overseas on an occasional basis, organizes painting trips for members, and publishes an online newsletter. The National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall and the Ministry of Education commissioned the EAA to paint large lanterns for display during the Lantern Festival; these won plaudits from both domestic and overseas visitors to the festival. The EAA also publishes Orchids & Life Monthly a global publication in which, every issue, two pages are reserved for EAA members’ paintings of orchids, demonstrating that in Taiwan , the “ Orchid Kingdom ,” not only do people excel at growing orchids, they also excel at painting them!

This exhibition of paintings by EAA members at the Cultural Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York is the EAA’s third overseas cultural exchange project of its kind, following on from similar exhibitions held in South Korea and Hong Kong. The works on display include winning paintings from past Everlasting Art Association Art Awards, as well as other examples of members’ ink brush painting and calligraphy – several dozen works in all. Also on display are members’ MFA theses and sketchbooks, the catalogs from past EAA exhibitions, ceramics, etc. Each work has its own unique style, but all of them display strong local character. We hope that the exhibition will attract visitors from all walks of life, and we look forward to hearing visitors’ comments!
